When I first joined the online world in 2001, I had a lot to learn. I went to an ‘expert’ and what I asked for and what they delivered were two completely different things. So began the online boot-strap approach of constant self-education, experimentation and testing that I have continued ever since.

I have made plenty of mistakes working things out so you don’t have to! To survive without a real job since 1994 means I have got a lot right and I love the variety and challenge!

As an educator, everything I do is designed to build on what you already know – whether you are a beginner or very knowledgeable. I have also done everything I suggest so I have had to fix all the bugs and I will admit, swear at my screen!

I work with my clients, students and the media to inform, educate and transform lives with specialist, current and practical knowledge, experience and insights in the areas of LinkedIn, careers, business, marketing, social media and WordPress websites.

I use technology to help you appear in search results in search engines (Google and Bing), chat results (ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot) and social media so that you can attract opportunities aligned with your values, purpose, goals and objectives without paying for advertising and by creating digital assets that are suitable for your target audience – for your career, business or enterprise.

I help you understand what you are doing and why – so we can choose the best of the best and focus on implementing what will work now and in the future.

LinkedIn Quiz - How much do you know?

All answers are based on my extensive experience on the platform since 21 December 2003 (Member Number 77,832) and LinkedIn consulting and training I have been providing since 2008.

Your current job title – and if you are not working now, I suggest you add in your current job title as ‘Career Research – Keyword, Keyword, Keyword etc’ and then your Employer as ‘Various’ and have it starting from the date your last job ended so that the algorithm sees you as ‘working’ now.

You can look at your Analytics and see how many profile views you have had in the last 90 days (aim for more than 100) and how many times you have appeared in search results in 7 days (aim for more than 50) https://www.linkedin.com/dashboard If your numbers are less than this, your LinkedIn Profile could be optimised.

Five – the About Section (the top five), each Experience you add, each License and Certification, each Education and each Project and the Skills section.

I personally recommend at least six of each – don’t forget to provide some information about what you would like included in your Recommendation when you ask a Connection to write one for you or alternatively, ask your Connection what they would like you to mention in your Recommendation for them. Remember that whatever you write can be used in court, so only comment on what you have personally observed.

Personally, I prefer a more comprehensive profile so that I can appear in more search results and so that people viewing my LinkedIn profile can self-select whether or not to contact me directly. A brief profile is still better than no profile.

I would say no. You can update it and mention that you are retired and only want to be contacted for family tree enquiries or to support your voluntary activities but it can be very lonely to disconnect from your lifetime network and lose touch with people you have known in the past.

It depends on your purpose for using LinkedIn. If you have not completed your LinkedIn Profile, purchasing Premium will not help you appear in more search results. I like having it to support the platform that supports me and to see the last 90 days of people who have looked at my LinkedIn Profile, for access to LinkedIn Learning, to be able to turn on an Automatic Reply on Messages and for the prestige value. I have chosen the ‘Jobs and Careers’ option and pay for 12 months at a time. https://premium.linkedin.com

I recommend that FROM NOW ON, you connect with everyone you meet in person, online, via email, via text, via chat message, via phone etc as your network equals your net worth! However, if you receive a connection request from someone who is not aligned with your purpose, you can decline the invitation. I recommend that you develop your own Connection Policy. I connect with basically anyone who reaches out to me that is based in Australia and anyone overseas that is aligned with my areas of interest., but not if I think they will spam me. Remember that if anyone becomes annoying, you can remove the connection without them knowing.

The LinkedIn Platform loves people who ‘listen’ (engage) not just ‘speak’ (post). So I recommend that you engage more often than you post (at least three to one but ideally, twelve to one).

Personally, I recommend once a week on a consistent basis. Each time you post, you ‘cannibalise’ the impact of your previous post. You can curate good quality content from elsewhere and share it or you can create your own content. It is a good idea to add a variety of different types of content including video and polls if you can.

If you would like to be known as an expert in your field of expertise, I would recommend once a month or once every three months (four times a year).

I recommend once a month, again, on a consistent basis, if it is relevant for your purpose.

Who is Sue Ellson?

Originally from Adelaide in South Australia and living in Melbourne since 1994, Victoria, Australia, my full time 11 year corporate career started in banking just six days after my last secondary school exam. I haven’t had a ‘real job’ since!

As a life-long learner by choice, I completed part-time university studies, entirely by correspondence in 2000 and have been attending up to four in person and online events per week ever since.

My extensive analogue and digital knowledge, skills and networks have been developed through values-aligned professional, pro bono and voluntary work.

I am the Founder of two social enterprises, Newcomers Network (2001 – now) and Camberwell Network (2012 – 2022).

I joined LinkedIn in 2003 (member number 77,832). I started consulting and training on LinkedIn in 2008. Since 2016, I have written and published five non-fiction books and my next two will be poetry books.

I have been featured on a 2023 list of LinkedIn Experts and have provided professional services to a range of local and international clients.

I am regularly quoted in the media on the topics of LinkedIn, careers, gigsters, business, social media, marketing, networking and being a newcomer.

As a gigster, I use technology to attract aligned gigs and I won’t be stopping anytime soon. I am always looking for one new thing to do every month! 

After hours, I enjoy catching up with family and friends, going for long walks and five rhythms dancing. 💃
